How to Play Tile Mahjong

Tile Mahjong takes the beautiful 144-tile Mahjong set and the same layered pyramid layout, then adds one clever twist: a four-slot holding bar at the top of the screen. Instead of matching two tiles directly on the board, you tap a free tile to send it up into the bar, and pairs resolve there.

A tile is free — and tappable — when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right edge is open, exactly as in classic Mahjong. The instant two matching tiles share the bar they smash and clear, opening their slots again while the survivors slide to the left. Matches follow the traditional rules: identical suit tiles, the same wind, the same dragon, any two Flowers, or any two Seasons.

The tension lives in that four-slot limit. Every tile you lift takes space, and if all four slots fill with tiles that don't match, the run jams. When that happens, Undo takes back your last pick, or you can restart the board or deal a new one. Shuffle remixes the tiles still on the board, but only while the bar has an open slot. Empty the entire board, with the bar clear, and you win.

The board is the same five-layer pyramid as our Mahjong Solitaire, dealt by the same generator, so until you shuffle, every board has at least one order of picks that clears it completely: lift matching tiles two at a time and the bar never fills. The difficulty comes from the tiles you cannot see yet. A tile you lift without its partner in reach sits in the bar, holding one of your four slots until that partner comes free.

Tap a free tile and it flies up to the next open slot; tap a tile that is not free and it shakes. The toolbar shows a timer and how many tiles are still on the board, and the win screen adds your pick count. Hint first looks for a free tile that completes a pair already in the bar, then for two free tiles that match each other, and otherwise simply points to a free tile you can lift. Undo takes back picks one at a time, and a shuffle can be undone too.

Strategy Tips for Tile Mahjong

• Guard your slot space. With only four slots, never lift a tile unless you can see its partner coming or it opens up the board.
• Send up sure pairs first. If two matching free tiles are both available, grab them back to back for an instant clear that costs no net space.
• Unblock, don't hoard. Prioritize free tiles that uncover several others — a single pick can cascade into new matches.
• Watch for triples and quads. When several copies of a tile are exposed, plan which two you'll pair so the others don't clog the bar.
• Keep one slot spare. Heading into a tricky section with an open slot gives you room to react instead of jamming.
• Undo early, not late. If the bar is filling with mismatches, back up right away — it's far easier to recover before all four slots lock.

The most common way to jam is lifting single tiles just to see what is underneath. Each one costs a slot until its partner appears, and three speculative picks leave one slot for everything else. If you must lift a tile without a partner in view, choose one that frees two or more tiles at once, and do not take a second unpaired tile until the first has cleared. Hint is worth a look before any speculative pick: it prefers a tile that completes a pair already in the bar, which is the one move that always frees a slot.

Count copies, too. Every tile has three possible partners: four of each suit tile, wind and dragon, plus four Flowers and four Seasons that match within their group. Once one pair of a kind has cleared, the last two copies can only clear with each other, so lifting one of them before the other is free ties up a slot for as long as the dig takes.
