How to Play Tile Mahjong

Tile Mahjong takes the beautiful 144-tile Mahjong set and the same layered pyramid layout, then adds one clever twist: a four-slot holding bar at the top of the screen. Instead of matching two tiles directly on the board, you tap a free tile to send it up into the bar, and pairs resolve there.

A tile is free — and tappable — when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right edge is open, exactly as in classic Mahjong. The instant two matching tiles share the bar they smash and clear, opening their slots again while the survivors slide to the left. Matches follow the traditional rules: identical suit tiles, the same wind, the same dragon, any two Flowers, or any two Seasons.

The tension lives in that four-slot limit. Every tile you lift takes space, and if all four slots fill with tiles that don't match, the run jams. When that happens, Undo takes back your last pick and Shuffle remixes the tiles still on the board. Empty the entire board — with the bar clear — and you win.

Strategy Tips for Tile Mahjong

• Guard your slot space. With only four slots, never lift a tile unless you can see its partner coming or it opens up the board.
• Send up sure pairs first. If two matching free tiles are both available, grab them back to back for an instant clear that costs no net space.
• Unblock, don't hoard. Prioritize free tiles that uncover several others — a single pick can cascade into new matches.
• Watch for triples and quads. When several copies of a tile are exposed, plan which two you'll pair so the others don't clog the bar.
• Keep one slot spare. Heading into a tricky section with an open slot gives you room to react instead of jamming.
• Undo early, not late. If the bar is filling with mismatches, back up right away — it's far easier to recover before all four slots lock.
